Opensignal D2D Satellite Map FAQ

Everything you need to know about how Opensignal’s D2D satellite map is built, what it shows, and how we measure it.

What is D2D satellite connectivity?

Direct-to-device (D2D) satellite connectivity allows smartphones and other mobile devices to connect directly to satellites without needing a cell tower. Unlike traditional satellite internet, which requires specialist hardware, D2D works with standard consumer mobile devices. It’s designed to extend connectivity to areas with no terrestrial network coverage, from remote regions to the open ocean.

What does this map show?

This map shows where consumers have made real D2D connections, based on Opensignal’s proprietary measurement data. Each data point represents a location where a device has successfully connected to a D2D service, giving you a ground-truth view of where D2D is live today.

How does Opensignal identify D2D connections?

Opensignal measures D2D using real-world data collected from subscribers around the globe whose devices have connected to a D2D service. This gives us an independent, ground-truth view of where D2D connections actually live, rather than modeled or estimated coverage.

How does Opensignal ensure privacy?

Opensignal takes data privacy and security very seriously. As such we have taken steps to go well beyond basic privacy and data protection requirements. For more information, see our Privacy Policy.

How are the points on the map determined?

Each area on the map represents a location where Opensignal detects that a subscriber’s device has recorded a D2D connection. Those connections are derived from Opensignal’s measurement data—which includes performance, quality, and coverage metrics—and reflect actual connections made by real devices in the places people care about being connected.

How often is the map updated?

The map is updated monthly, ensuring it reflects the most current picture of where D2D connections are live.

How far back does the data go?

Data collection for the map began on January 11, 2026, so everything shown on the map reflects D2D connections from that date forward.

Why am I seeing some results in countries where D2D isn’t commercially available?

Opensignal tracks where a D2D connection occurs on an eligible handset. When results appear in locations where consumer satellite connections aren’t yet available, there are edge cases that would explain this. For example, individuals roaming from a country with satellite plans in place may be temporarily in another country. A satellite connection may be observed because the use is outside of typical service coverage, or they don’t have connectivity where they are traveling.

Why did Opensignal build this?

Opensignal has tracked mobile network experience for over a decade. As D2D becomes an important part of the connectivity landscape, we want to give operators, regulators, and analysts a clear, independent view of where the technology penetration stands globally. The map is free to access and will be updated as the market evolves.
